A couple aged 91 and 89 have finally married after 60 years together.
Alex and Jane Hamilton first met in Birmingham in 1956 when they were both dating other partners.
Unable to stay apart, they decided six years later to start a new life together in Alex’s hometown of Edinburgh.
They’ve been a couple ever since — and parents to five adult children — but only recently decided to “make it official.”
Mr and Mrs Hamilton tied the knot at their local parish church in Tillicoultry, Clackmannanshire, on Sunday.
Attending the celebrations were her two daughters, Sally and Kate, Alex’s sons, Gordon and Neil, and Jane’s daughter, Beverley, and their 11 grandchildren.
The couple said they had “the perfect wedding” – complete with Piper – and are now looking forward to their official honeymoon next month.
Ms Hamilton told BBC Radio Scotland’s Drivetime programme: “I’m feeling very good. We had a fantastic weekend, a fantastic wedding. Everyone had fun and it was just perfect.
“All of our children and grandchildren came, with my eldest granddaughter as his maid of honor and Alex’s son as his best man.”
The couple had occasionally discussed getting married over the years, but their busy lives of running their own butter and cheese company seemed to get in the way.
Ms Hamilton said: “We never got engaged. But then a few weeks ago Alex sat at the end of the bed and he said I think we should get married and that was it.
“We have a brilliant relationship. We had our ups and downs like most people, but there was never any doubt in our minds.”
For the new husband Alex, the wedding was the culmination of “wonderful 60 years”.
He said: “When I first met Jane, I looked at her and I thought, this is the woman I’ve been looking for my whole life.
“We talked about getting married once or twice but we were so busy with work and it was very exhausting.
“The wedding itself was amazing. We have a wonderful family who all seem to get along well.
“The future now is about living as long as possible, making the most of what’s left of our lives and living each day as it comes.”
Jane also said she never doubted that they would be together for the rest of their lives — with or without a wedding ring.
“When I first met Alex, I saw his cheeky smile and I was blown away,” she said.
“But he was married and I was going to get married six weeks later, so we just figured that wasn’t going to happen.
“But in the end we just couldn’t tear ourselves away from each other and in 1962 we finally got together.”
The couple’s first romantic break in the 1960s was at Oban in Argyll and Bute – and that’s where they will return for their honeymoon.
Ms Hamilton said: “We’re going back for three nights in June and that’s going to be lovely.”
