A child spent a night locked in a coach in a hotel car park after falling asleep during a school trip to London.
The teenager, a student at Broadstone Middle School in Poole, was left on the bus after a theatrical performance on Thursday.
Castleman Academy Trust, which runs the school in Dorset, said the child was safe and well and remained on the journey.
It said it had informed the relevant authorities and was conducting a thorough investigation into how the “very serious error” happened.
The incident, reported by the Bournemouth Echo, happened in north London. The children returned home as planned on Friday evening.
The school, which educates children aged nine to 13, said it had “taken every possible measure to ensure something like this never happens again”.
A statement from the foundation said: “After attending a performance in central London last Thursday night, the children traveled back to the hotel on the north outskirts of London.”
“Unfortunately, a child who fell asleep on the way home was left asleep on the locked bus in the hotel parking lot.”
“We want to reassure everyone that the child is doing well and that the child is doing well and after speaking to his parents were keen to continue the journey so they got back safely on Friday night.”
The Academy said a “very serious error had occurred” despite “robust” risk assessments.
A spokesman said: “We are now focused on a systematic and thorough investigation into the incident. We are working with the parents and staff involved to find out how this happened.”
