School gender guidance: Parents should be in the know – minister

Parents should be aware of what is happening to their child, said the Equality Secretary ahead of gender advice for English schools.

Kemi Badenoch told the BBC she “could not elaborate” on what will be included in the new guidance, which is expected next week.

According to recent reports, schools will be asked to let parents know when students question their gender.

Ms Badenoch said: “It is right that parents know what is going on with their children at school.”

She told the BBC’s Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg that the guidelines would bring “clarity” to schools “about how to deal with children who are suffering from gender issues”.

She added: “There is a lot of confusion about what the law says and it is important that parents know what is going on with their children and what is happening to them at school. That’s why we make sure we’re robust.” A guide that will stand up to scrutiny. That will be available shortly.”

Asked if trans students may feel that their teachers are “outing” them to their parents against their will, Ms Badenoch cautioned against speculating about what will be in the guidelines, adding that “they are best read in their entirety and in context”.

Ms Badenoch added that the Government’s guidance will ensure “everyone finds the right balance”.

The Department of Education is expected to publish a draft for consultation before issuing the final guidance.

The guidelines may also address issues such as whether same-sex schools are legally required to accept transgender students.
