Carlisle: More arrests over alleged assault on black pupil

Three more teenagers have been arrested over reports of an alleged hate crime on a black schoolboy in Carlisle.

A video circulating online appears to show the student being pushed and punched by a white boy before being made to kiss his shoes.

Four boys have now been arrested over the alleged attack, said to have happened in the Upperby area on Friday.

Cumbria Constabulary said “abhorrent” images were circulating online and urged people not to share any video.

One boy was arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated actual bodily harm in the early hours of Saturday.

The three others were later arrested on suspicion of abetting racially aggravated actual bodily harm.

Cumbria Constabulary said the four boys, in their early teens, were from Carlisle and police patrols had been stepped up in the area.

Supt Sarah Jones said: “These are abhorrent images circulating online that have caused shock and concern in both the community and among officers here at Cumbria Police.

“As arrests have been made, we would continue to urge people not to share the video further so as not to impede any potential legal proceedings or to identify any of the children involved.

“We understand an incident such as this can be concerning for many but we can reassure the community this is an incident we are taking very seriously – and we have made four arrests.”
