Thursday was the warmest day of the year so far but Friday has seen the weather starting to change.
Rain is in the forecast for the weekend as the weather pattern takes on a more unsettled look.
Is warmer weather set to return next week, or might we have to wait a little longer?
No doubt many were hoping the warm and sunny weather would last into the weekend.
Unfortunately a change is arriving at just the wrong time with Friday seeing a strong southerly wind push warmer air into Scotland. With more cloud elsewhere – and some rain – temperatures will drop from Thursday’s high of 21.3C recorded at Northolt in London and Chertsey in Surrey.
Into the weekend, an area of low pressure is moving up from Portugal towards the UK. On Saturday rain in Scotland and Northern Ireland will be followed by sunshine and showers in England and Wales with the chance of thunderstorms. Temperatures will be lower but winds will be lighter.
On Sunday, although there will be a lot of cloud, there should be less rain with temperatures to drop to become closer to the average for late March, around 10-13C.
There will be some good news for people that suffer from hay fever. Tree pollen levels, that have been very high in some places recently, will be much lower this weekend.
The weather pattern next week is what we would call “mobile”. A stronger jet stream over the Atlantic will bring our weather in from the west. It will fluctuate throughout the week between sunny spells and showers or longer spells of rain accompanied by stronger winds.
This means we’re not going to see a return to the warm weather we had a few days ago in the short term. Daytime maximum temperatures will typically be 12-14C and temperatures will fall to around 2-4C at night with the weather looking unsettled and more typically “spring-like”.
March is a transition time – from winter to spring – during which we often see big temperature swings depending on the direction of the wind. Although not unusual, the warmer spell we’ve just had has been made more likely due to climate change, external, according to Climate Central.
Heading into April, will the weather settle down and could there be frosts to worry gardeners and growers? The monthly outlook is here.
