BATON ROUGE, La. (Seminoles.com) – Number 11 seed Florida State Women’s Basketball ended its season Thursday night in the inaugural First Four, falling to 11th seed Missouri State, 61-50, at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center in Baton Rouge, La.
The Seminoles (17-14) finished a year in which they made their ninth consecutive NCAA tournament appearance. FSU has appeared in every NCAA postseason since 2013.
The Lady Bears (25-7) used a vibrant style of play and controlled the colors for much of the competition. They will play on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. ET in Baton Rouge to play sixth-seeded Ohio State.
A pair of freshmen have risen to lead FSU into the First Quarter. Freshman Point Guard O’Mariah Gordon ended her strong season by finishing with a team-best 12 points and adding five assists. Makayla Timpson chipped in eight points with six rebounds.
After Missouri State trailed 14-1 in the first quarter, the Seminoles ran 25-4 and attacked the basket to make many mistakes, leading 26-18 and leading 3:15 before the break. The FSU went 16-of-20 from the free-kick line in the first half, but some of its momentum was stopped when Missouri State hit a late 3-point campaign in the second quarter to make it 29-29 in the second quarter. to banish the break.
The second half belonged to Missouri State as the FSU mounted 10 turnovers in that time span and the Lady Bears finished the game and the Seminoles finished 16-4 in second chance points. But the FSU remained within striking distance behind 52-46 after a layup by Gordon with 4:42 left in the game. Brice Calip counterattacked with a bench shot mid-range jumper to ignite a 7-0 game seal for the Lady Bears.
Missouri State finished with four games scored in double figures, led by Mya Bhinhar 12 points.
