Chelsea will face Real Madrid in the quarter-finals of the Champions League following the elimination of Uefa in Nyon, in a repeat of last season’s semi-final.
The Blues will host LaLiga leaders in the first leg at Stamford Bridge, in a match that may be played behind closed doors after European Union owner Roman Abramovich was sanctioned.
The defended European champions will then face a trip to the Bernabeu a week later in the return match, with the winners of the tie against Manchester City or Atletico Madrid in the semi-finals.
Responding to the draw ahead of his trip to Middlesbrough this weekend, Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel said: “It is difficult. A challenge can not be much higher than playing in the Bernabeu with spectators. There is also great excitement surrounding this game.
Liverpool will face Benfica with the winners of this quarter-final against either Villarreal or Bayern Munich on the other side of the draw.
Chelsea suffered fears of a second leg in their last 16 clash against Lille as Burak Yilmaz scored a penalty for the French champions, but goals from Christian Pulisic and Cesar Azpilicueta eventually gave the Blues a 2-1 lead. Victory in the night and a comfortable 4- 1 triumph on aggregate.
