Two Berks high school graduates advanced to the quarterfinals with some wins Thursday on the first day of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in Detroit.
Exeter grad Austin DeSanto pa 133 pounds and Boyertown grad Jordan Wood pa 285 remain in the hunt for gold.
DeSanto, a Iowa senior Redshirt placed fifth, defeated Air Force Sidney Flores by technical fall in the first round and 4:09 in the first round, then defeated Pitt’s Micky Philippi 5-2. He will face Virginia Tech’s fourth-seeded Korbin Myers in the quarterfinals today.
DeSanto finished third last year.
Wood, a fifth-year senior at Lehigh who finished sixth, defeated West Virginia Michael Wolfgram 1-0 in the first round, then beating Oregon State’s Gary Traub 6-0. He will face third-seed Tony Cassioppi today in the quarterfinals.
