Major Sinkhole opens on Gympie Rd in Brisbane after floods

“Lane reduction is likely to cause major delays today while it is urgently needed,” Mr Mellish said.

In the comments of the post, a local said she was driving across the street on Friday and noticed an unusual “dip” in the road at the spot where the sinkhole has now opened.

The road is a main road and is also close to Westfield Chermside Shopping Center, which means long delays can be expected all day Saturday and possibly until Sunday, depending on how long the repairs take.

If it was caused by recent floods, the sinkhole is the latest in a series of damage to public infrastructure caused by the rain event.

A number of roads were cut off by floodwaters, and public roads and bike paths were significantly affected, including the road that runs next to Kedron Brook, much of which was washed away.
