Mr Biden had pledged to announce his candidacy later this month, and the White House said it was still on track to do so.

Earlier this week, sources confirmed on CBS News that the president had interviewed three possible candidates to replace retired Judge Stephen Breyer: Jackson, Michelle Childs and Leondra Kruger. Jackson is a judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.

During his presidential campaign, Mr. Biden promised selects an African American woman to serve in the high court, arguing that this nomination has long been to be made.

“The person I will appoint will be someone with extraordinary qualifications, character, experience and integrity,” Biden said last month. “And this person will be the first black woman nominated to the United States Supreme Court. In my opinion, it will take a long time. I made that commitment during the presidential campaign and I will keep that commitment.”

Breyer announced his plan to retire last month after turning 28 in the country’s highest court.

Democrats are hoping to quickly confirm the presidential election in the Senate. If they succeed, this will be the first confirmation of a Biden Supreme Court candidate and the fourth confirmed candidate in just four years. Three conservative judges were confirmed under former President Trump.

The election of the president is not expected to upset the ideological balance of the court.

The White House has insisted that the president will announce his election at the end of the month, despite Russia’s aggressive stance on back and forth. attack on Ukraine. On Friday, the president is scheduled to meet with NATO heads of state in the morning and has no other public events.
