“I grabbed my things and went to work”

On Thursday morning, Aston Martin announced that Sebastian Vettel had tested positive for the coronavirus. A dramatic start to the season for Vettel, but good news for Nico Hulkenberg, who once again fills a pilot.

Hulkenberg’s departure from Formula One has remained anything but definite. Not only did he stay as a reserve pilot for several teams, but he actually did fill in a few times for drivers affected by the coronavirus.

Hulkenberg was called out of bed

On the opening weekend of the 2022 season, it was a direct hit: Vettel tested positive for the coronavirus, then Hulkenberg was expected shortly after at the Bahrain International Circuit. Very short term, but the German is used to it now.

“I got out of bed, got the news, grabbed my things and went to work,” he said. he gave us during the Press conference. Since he only did simulator work for Aston Martin, he expected that he would need time to get used to it, but this did not prove to be a problem at all.

During the first free practice sessions on Friday, he was able to participate quite well. Nevertheless, he sees the race weekend as a big challenge, also on a physical level. Now that he has some training time, it’s about finding the limit of the car.
