The annual Melbourne Press Club Quill Awards to celebrate excellence in journalism were held at the Crown Palladium in Melbourne on Friday night.
The Age collected a Bagful Quill Awards 2021 and had many highly acclaimed entries. Of the 12 winners of The Age it was Greek Australian cartoonist for Jim Pavlidis.
Pavlidis won the 2021 Cartoon Quill for ‘Net Zero, Zero Net’, for his October 2021 cartoon. It depicts Prime Minister Scott Morrison as a trapeze artist who reaches for a piece of coal but misses it, and is about to fall into a burning earth, with the caption ‘Zero Net’. In a panel next to it, the Earth is on a net, safe from fire with the caption, ‘Not Zero’.
The judges said Pavlidis’ “work is clean and bold, his text is sharp and sharp and his subject matter is as up-to-date as you can get.”
Age investigative journalists Nick McKenzie and Joel Tozer won Grant Hattam Quill for investigative journalism for their “Neo Nazis Exposed” series, with judges praising it as the “clear winner” for the category.
“The investigation was sustained over eight months, and put the reporter and the undercover informant at serious personal risk,” the judges said.
The AgeTom Cowie and Rachel Dexter won the 2021 Quill for Coverage of Women in Sport. Judges said: “Tom and Rachael’s piece shed light on a little-published sport of powerlifting and the entrenched bullying, sexist harassment behavior at the very top.”
Liam Mannix also won the first 2021 Excellence in Science, Medical and Health Reporting from The Age. Judges said: “Mannix’s reports challenged expectations that vaccines signaled the end of the pandemic, outlining Delta’s real impact on children and examining the rise of new variants.”
Michael Warner of the Herald Sonn took out the coveted 2021 Gold Quill for his scoop on the racism of the Collingwood Football Club. Judges said Warner’s scoop put a series of events on the train that shook Australia’s biggest sports club and its high-profile president.
Warner’s exposition of racism at the club led to Do Better reporting and “forced the AFL to evaluate its efforts to combat racism in sport.”
Bang Xiao, Jarrod Fankhauser, Steven Viney or ABC News won the 2021 Quill for Reporting on Multicultural Affairs. Judges say the winner’s entry – explored “borrowed through a migration lens – illuminates the lives of those who were the brunt of systemic racism and exploitation in Australia and long before the pandemic began.”
Greek Australian, Casie Zervos from 7 News was highly praised for her report ‘Greg Lynn Arrested.’
Neos Kosmos Published by Christopher Gogos,Neos Kosmos Writer and Melbourne Press Club board member, Fotis Kapetopoulos, and ABC Radio Melbourne and ABC Victoria Operations Manager Melbourne Kon Karamountzos were at the awards. Helen Zahos Tedx Speaker, Registered Nurse, Paramedic, who has done many humanitarian and disaster relief response work around the world was also at the awards ceremony.
The 33 categories of the Quill Awards include Podcasting, Innovation in the Media, Young Journalist of the Year, Business News, Feature Writing, Radio Current, Coverage of Women in Sport, Reporting on Multicultural Affairs, the 46th Graham Perkin Australian Journalist of the Year , and more.
