They are still reportedly “solid and mix” despite Story’s preference to play shortstop.
Trevor Story and the Red Sox have been linked for months, but it still seems like a big roadblock: he prefers to play shortstop, and the Red Sox currently have an all-star shortstop in Xander Bogaerts.
The story, however, takes into account a short-term positional move if necessary, as long as he ends up on a competitor, per MLB Network’s Jon Heyman.
Athletic Ken Rosenthal reported that the Red Sox are still “solid and mixed” despite Story’s preference to stay in his natural position.
Bogaerts has the option to choose his current contract this offseason, so it’s possible for the Red Sox to put the story on second bases, elsewhere in the field or with a designated hitter for a year and then back to the shortstop when the Bogaerts leave.
It seems like a lot of finagling, but Heyman has reported that the Red Sox remain one of many prominent free throws, along with the Yankees, Astros, Rangers, and Giants, among others. Heyman called him “the last big shortstop standing” after Carlos Correa closed a deal with the twins.
Heyman said the story would be very open to considering a short-term deal with Opt-Opts, which could align him with the Yankees. The astros also seem like a logical fit, as Correa is gone and the story could immediately help fill the void.
“The Yankees and Astros may have an advantage in pursuing Trevor Story because he plays SS in both places,” Heyman tweeted Saturday morning. “Two good choices because they also won teams. The Yankees are definitely where they really were not at Correa. Preference history.”
Story, 29, is a .272 career hitter with 158 home runs and 450 RBIs in six seasons with the Rockies. He hit .251 this past year with 24 homers and 75 RBIs and is widely regarded as an elite talent.
