Foggia dominated to take the championship lead

The very first Grand Prix motorcycle race in Indonesia since 1997 ended with the last championship-Luxembourg Foggia, who cut a disappointing seventh in the opening round in Qatar to open his account in 2022 in the highest possible way.

From the line at the start Aspar Sergio Garcia jumped Poleman Carlos Tatay on the run in the 1st lap as Migno went from fifth to second.

Snipers Honda rider Migno took the lead from Garcia in round 10 to lead the pack across the line to begin the second round.

Valentino Rossi’s protégé and Qatar race winner came under attack from Foggia in the Tour 10, but the Leopard Honda rider ran far and fell to fourth.

However, in the fourth round, Foggia recovered and took the lead right in round 12, dismissing Guevara from the first and jumping straight into the distance.

After the sixth round, Foggia was already a second clear of the war group behind, as Aspar GasGas teammates Izan Guevara and Garcia fought hard over the spot.

Foggia’s gap continued to swell, rising to over five seconds, the final stages coming and he reached outside to comfortably cross on his first win of the season.

Guevara prevailed in the second battle as he tore down Garcia and put a second between himself and the group behind him.

Poleman Tatay – who recovered from a long round penalty for a track boundary injury – finished the podium after a final round move to Garcia for third, while Tech3 KTM rider Deniz Oncu was fifth.

Prustel GP rider Xavier Artigas finished in the top six, beating Ajo KTM’s Jaume Masia by 0.327s on the cracked flag.

Avintia KTM rider Elia Bartolini, who was sandwiched between Ajo KTM Pair Masia and Bartolini’s rookie Daniel Holgado, with Tatsuki Suzuki, who finished in the top 10 on his sister Leopard Racing bike.

Seven riders failed to reach the cracked flag, most notably Migno, who suffered a climax in the last lap, while Max Racing Husqvarna’s Ayumu Sasaki Migno’s crash also drove Sasaki out of the race.

The impressive rookie Diogo Moreira should start in the 23-lap race of the second on the grid.

But the Brazilian was forced to start on the back due to a technical problem with his MT Helmets KTM, which would persist in the race and eventually force him to pull out.

After two races in 2022, Foggia now leads the standings with one point from Garcia.
