Baseball Blasts MInnesota 14-7 – Creighton University Athletics

Omaha, Neb. – An eight-run fourth inning took all of offensive Creighton baseball as the Bluejays beat Minnesota 14-7 to secure the series victory over the Golden Gophers on Saturday, March 19th.

Creighton climbed to 8-6 this season with Saturday’s victory, while Minnesota fell to 5-14 this season.

The Bluejays struck out first with a few runs without a hit in the third, using three Minnesota errors to jump to a 2-0 lead.

Minnesota even pulled to the top of the fourth, getting RBI singles from Boston Merlia and Otto Grimm.

The end of the fourth did not really begin until the Bluejays had two men out. The Inning starter with a groove out, then a walk to Junior Sterling Hayes, followed by a strike in search of Creighton’s second out. Sophomore Nolan Clifford grabbed an RBI double in right field, then freshman Hogan Helligson delivered an RBI single to put Creighton back two at 4-2. A single through the left side of Junior Andrew Meggs put runners on the corners, while Sophomore Alan Roden a walker worked to load the base. Junior Jared Wegner Blat a two-run double into the middle that was bubbling, allowing Roden to score and giving the Bluejays a 7-2 advantage. A further walk ended the afternoon for Minnesota starter JP Massey after 3.2 innings.

Golden Gopher Reliever Jack Liffrig was greeted by a senior RBI single Chris Esposito as well as another foul error that allowed Inning to cross the seventh run. Hayes continued the Bluejay hit parade with another RBI single to make it 10-2.

Creighton added three runs in the fifth on a solo home run by Helligso, an RBI Triple by Roden and an RBI pitch by Freshman Brant Voth to expand to 13-3. The Bluejays’ last run came on a sack escape Kyle Hess on the seventh.

Meggs led the Bluejay Attack with three hits and shot two holes, finishing 3-for-6 that day.

Bluejay starter pads Dominic Cancellieri deserved the win (2-1), Minnesota held on to five runs on seven hits and two walks and six innings of work, while Gopher starter JP Massey took the loss (1-2). Massey was responsible for nine runs (seven deserved), four hits allowed, four walks in a hit batter and 3.2 shots.

Creighton goes on Sunday for the series sweep, trying to earn his ninth win in 11 games. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
