Doohan suffer anti-climax in F2 opener

Jack Doohan experienced a disappointing start to his Formula 2 campaign in Bahrain, and had to fight back just to get to 10th after a minor car crash ruined his hopes.

The 19-year-old son of motorcycle great Mick Doohan was looking in good shape to land his first F2 victory in the opening race of the season on Sunday, until an accident, as he came out of the pit lane, blew his chance.

Virtuosi Racing’s teenager Hope, who is looking for the same title as his fellow Australian Oscar Piastri won last year, qualified on Friday to earn the pole position.

And although he was taken over at the beginning, he took the lead again and was strong after his 15th round pit stop.

However, Doohan came into light contact with the back of the ART Grand Prix car of French pilot Theo Pourchaire when he returned to racing.

It damaged its own car, forcing a quick return to the pit to repair the damaged front wing.

When he had another pit stop shortly after, he had gone from first to last in just a few laps and his chance had completely disappeared.

He showed significant determination to fight back to the 10th and get a consolation point to go with the two he qualified for first.

It was, however, Pourchaire who took his third F2 victory after the chaotic race with two safety cars, ahead of New Zealander Liam Lawson and Estonia Juri Vips coming home.
