Marines release names of 4 killed in crash in Norway during NATO drill

The U.S. Navy released the names of the U.S. Navy on Sunday four Marines who died when his Osprey MV-22B crashed into northern Norway during a NATO drill on Friday.

The Marines identified the deceased as: Captain Matthew J. Tomkiewicz, 27, of Fort Wayne, Indiana; Captain Ross A. Reynolds, 27, of Leominster, Massachusetts; Gunnery Sargent James W. Speedy, 30, of Cambridge, Ohio; and Corporal Jacob M. Moore, 24, of Catlettsburg, Kentucky.

“The pilots and crew were committed to fulfilling their mission and serving a greater cause than themselves,” Major General Michael Cederholm, commander-in-chief of the 2nd Aircraft Wing, said in a letter to his marines. and their families.

The Marines said the remains of the four dead service members were successfully removed from the crash site and are in the process of being returned to the U.S. The Marines assisted in the recovery effort, which was led by Norway.

The four Marines were assigned to the 2nd Wing of Marine Aircraft, II Marine Expeditionary Force, and the four Marines were assigned to 261 Squadron Medium Tiltrotor Navy. They were participating in a NATO exercise known as Cold Response 2022 near Bode, Norway, when the MV -22B Osprey crashed.

NATO’s annual exercises in Norway have nothing to do with the war Ukraine, according to the Associated Press. This year, they include about 30,000 soldiers, 220 aircraft and 50 ships from 27 countries. Exercises began on March 14 and ended on April 1.

The cause of the accident is being investigated.
