After beating the competition on the field, former Virginia Tech linebacker Daniel Marshall Griffith blew the competition on his “American Idol” debut Sunday night. The Chesapeake native is on his way to Hollywood after a unanimous “yes” by judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan.
Griffith, 24, played college football for four years but only started making music live for the last five to six months before his audition, he told the judge.
Griffith said he loved and played country music for almost his entire life, but began performing formally after singing at his grandfather’s memorial services. After a handful of live appearances, he decided to audition for “American Idol.”
He sang Garth Brooks’ ballad “The Dance” during his audition, and the judges were impressed by his performance and natural talent. They decided to roll the dice on Griffith’s singing gift and beat his ticket to the next stage of the competition for season 20 of “American Idol”.
Griffith goes with 17-year-old Kenedi Anderson, the high school senior from Crozet, who auditioned two episodes earlier. The two will represent the Commonwealth as the race to cross the next American Idol.
