March 22 – Belgian club Antwerp have named Marc Overmars as their new technical director, just weeks after Dutchman Ajax left Amsterdam under a cloud.

The Dutchman’s anonymous departure from Ajax came after he resigned from his role to send “inappropriate messages” to female colleagues, a situation that club CEO Edwin van der Sar described as “frightening”.
On Monday, Antwerp revealed to Overmars the person to lead the club forward. Overmars said he was “ashamed” of his behavior at Ajax, and promised that “this will not happen again.”
He said: “I have completed this period. I am 48 years old and then you do not have much time to lose. We did not talk about it during the contract negotiations. A new beginning has been made. It is behind me.”
Antwerp sees the past of its new staff as a “private matter”.
Antwerp manager Sven Jaecques said that Overmars’ values matched the club’s values, but that Antwerp did not particularly talk to female staff.
He said: “We talked about it. As adults. Not specifically with the women of the club, but it was discussed of course. Everything was discussed. But of course it’s mainly about football.
The former Arsenal, Barcelona and Holland bands held the position of Ajax director for ten years. He has been credited in part for Ajax’s recent national and European achievements. Antwerp boss Paul Gheyssens hopes the overmars could lead Antwerp to a home title in the short term. The club is currently third in the table.
