One dead after a small plane crash in Brant County

One person is dead after a small plane crashed in Brant County late Monday afternoon.

Brant County OPP said officers responded to the crash at Brantford Municipal Airport on Aviation Avenue at 5:20 p.m.

“Witness accounts show that [the plane] seems to be on approach, but that is still to be determined, “Brant County OPP Const. Conrad Vitalis told CTV News.

Brant County Fire Chief Geoff Hayman said about 20 firefighters also responded to the scene and were forced to walk about 400 feet with equipment because the ground near the wreckage was too soft for large vehicles.

“We were able to get out of there at the time of the crash. It’s been raining since then, so it’s a little harder, ”said Const. Vitalis said.

One person was transported by paramedics to the hospital where they were pronounced dead, OPP said. Their identities are withheld until notification of family members.

Police said the accident happened in an open field and no other structures or vehicles were involved. Firefighters used absorbent material to clean aviation fuel from the wreckage.

According to the Transportation Safety Board (TSB), the aircraft in question was a Cessna 172RG.

OPP held the scene overnight and investigators with TSB are expected to appear on the scene on Tuesday morning.

The Orange Air Ambulance confirmed that it also responded to the crash but was not needed to transport anyone to the hospital.
