March 21, 2022 – Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas was hospitalized and treated for an infection.
Court officials said Thomas was admitted to Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, DC on Friday night after suffering from flu-like symptoms. He was tested, diagnosed with an infection and treated with IV antibiotics.
“His symptoms are subsiding, he is red comfortable, and he expects to be released from the hospital in a day or two,” court officials said in a statement Sunday.
The extent of Thomas’ illness was unclear, according to USA today, but court officials have confirmed he has no COVID-19 and it is not linked to coronavirus.
The Supreme Court is due to hear oral arguments on Monday. Court officials said Thomas wanted to participate in the “consideration and discussion of all cases for which he is not present based on the letters, transcripts and audio of the oral arguments.”
All nine Supreme Court justices were vaccinated and strengthened against COVID-19, according to The New York Times. At least two judges – Amy Coney Barrett and Brett Kavanaugh – had the coronavirus. Judges are regularly tested for the virus.
Thomas, 73, is the longest serving judge on the Supreme Court. He was nominated by President George HW Bush in 1991 to fill the seat of Justice Thurgood Marshall.
