Moneyline Analysis

The Hurricanes strike in the Metro Division has expanded as Carolina travels a season-high four-game losing streak in today’s big game against the Bolts. Rod Brind’Amour’s team failed to score more than three goals in 11 consecutive games and newcomer Max Domi is highly doubtful to make his Hurricanes debut tonight.

The recent losses could easily be attributed to a tough schedule as the home team lost to the Penguins, Leafs, Capitals and Rangers – all playoff teams. Carolina has not often been a home dog this season (just twice) but this line is starting to move terribly close to a pick ’em, and with Blitz pulling a few pages in time, this is another tough matchup for d ‘Canes.

The Lightning are the team to beat in hockey after winning the cup in back-to-back seasons, but that has not stopped them from becoming competitive in the trading market yesterday. They loaded on bottom-6 forwards and added Riley Nash, Nick Paul and Brandon Hagel. This was already one of the deepest defensive teams, now they have a dominant third line, once again, and do not have many weaknesses in their matchup with the fighting hurricanes.

The Lightning have not rolled out their competition recently, with just two wins over their last six games, but they have only played twice since March 16 and had two full days off before today’s match. Conversely, this is Carolina’s fourth game in six nights, featuring two games on the road.

This game will feature Andrei Vasilevskiy and Freddie Andersen on the net. Andersen is 1-3 SU in his last four, but it was more of an issue with the team’s offense as he has a 2.29 GAA over those four games.

Vasilevskiy will get a good match against an icy Carolina attack. The Canes are 0-for-15 over their last six games with the man advantage and have scored more than two goals in regulation (not with empty net goals) just three times over their last 10 games. Vasilevskiy had gone through a difficult patch, but former Vezina and Conn Smythe winners allowed two or fewer goals in three straight starts. This is not the goalkeeper that the Canes want to see in order to snap this goal funk.

The Canes get a little hot on their heels from the New York Rangers, who rise to the Eastern Conference rankings, and even if they slip out of that loser, the Bolts are not the best match for them. Tampa is just as comfortable playing in 2-1 games as the Canes and the visitors have the offensive advantage and the Power Play advantage – which might just be enough to get a win here as the line is closer to a pick ’em moves.

Predict: Lightning ML (-105)

Covers NHL betting analysis

Over / Under Analysis

You will not find many bets that have been successful in betting over on Carolina players. Over their last nine competitions, the home team is 1-7-1 O / U, while only four other teams have scored more unders in the season than Carolina. This unit has scored just 2.25 goals per game (31st) and allowed 2.17 goals per game (1st) in the last 30 days. So not only do you get a cold insult, you also get the stingiest team in the entire hockey stick.

At home, the Canes averaged just 5.38 overall goals per game, which is the lowest home mark in hockey. Carolina is 2-10 O / U home over its last 12 home games, dating back to January. The PNC Arena is just not a place where we see a lot of goals, and with both teams fighting to collect profits, this could be a hard fought game between two of the East at best.

Tampa has not scored a ton of 5-on-5 goals lately, as Lightning has been held on two or fewer goals in four of the last five and in three of those four have been held on a single goal. The power play has three goals over that stretch, meaning John Cooper’s club has scored just six goals with equal power over his last five. The Canes ranked third in goal percentage, third in Corsi% and allowed the second least 5-on-5 goals in hockey. Tampa is not slipping into this hard shed and running things up tonight.

The Canes also have the best penalties in the league, allow the second-least shots per game, and are shorthanded no more than three times in eight straight games. The offense will be high tonight and we do not think the scorer needs to sharpen his pencil. Therefore, a total of 5.5.

The previous reunion closed with a total of 5.5 and both insults were in much better shape than they were tonight. The Hurricanes’ power play is non-existent and they possess the best PK in the league, while the Bolts have recently played Under Hockey and are 5-0 up against the Under five straight. This one will have some playoff vibes that should keep the score.

Predict: Under 5.5 (+100)

Best bet

With some fighting insults and elite goalkeepers occupying both circles, we are looking at some niche and derivatives markets for our best bets.

Carolina has failed to score four goals in any of her last 11 games and has also conceded shots and goals at the league’s best rate in the last 30 days. This is the stingiest team in hockey on home ice, while the Bolts have scored just nine goals over their last five games and have had a better offense at home than on the road.

When we say this, we doubt that either side will score the four goals tonight. Bet365 pays +105 for neither of the team to score four goals and the “Race to Goal” market is a widely available derivatives market that can offer value in a game that we project as low-scoring versus two-fight insults.

Pick: No team has scored four goals (+105)
