UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski admits he only accused Max Holloway of falsifying an injury out of frustration.
Since Holloway (23-6 MMA, 19-6 UFC) and two consecutive title fights, Volkanovski has been asked about a Holloway trilogy non-stop. It’s often rare for a 2-0 fighter in a series to get a third crack, but because their rematch at UFC 251 was closely contested, a potential trilogy was always on the rise.
A third fight between Volkanovski and Holloway was finally scheduled for UFC 272, but just days after the fight was announced, Holloway had to withdraw due to injury. Wanting to compete, Volkanovski was booked against Chan Sung Jung instead just a month later on April 9 at UFC 273, only to find out that Holloway was ready by then to serve as a backup.
That prompted Volkanovski (23-1 MMA, 10-0 UFC) to question Holloway’s injury, something he ultimately regretted.
“It was frustrating because back then when I really wanted that fight, you know what I mean, and when you heard he was injured, especially when they announced it earlier, it was all a bit confusing and frustrating,” he said. Volkanovski Submission Radio.
“So you obviously saw my frustration. I wanted to tweet and have a small shot at Max and his fans, and that was the only reason that in my name was pretty stupid to be honest. That just shows you where my Head back then, do you know what I mean? That’s something I’ve really been working on lately. “
Volkanovski said he used to make the negative comments about him – but he will not.
“I’m such a person, right? I always want people on my side and when they are not, I take everything to heart and all that sort of thing,” Volkanovski said. “So, we’re always about what haters have said and like what all these people are saying. So I always felt like I had something to prove and wanted to get back at him, but now I’m literally not giving an F about any of that.
