Hillsong founder resigns as part of “inappropriate” behavior toward two women

Hillsong founder Brian Houston has resigned in connection with allegations of “inappropriate behavior” he allegedly exhibited toward two women, the church announced.

Current senior pastor Phil Dooley of Hillsong Church, a world-renowned megachurch based in Australia, announced the indictment after an emergency staff meeting on Wednesday, the Daily Mail reported.

“We want to advise you that Pastor Brian Houston has resigned as Global Senior Pastor of Hillsong Church and the Board of Directors has accepted his resignation,” Dooley said in a statement to the outlet.

“We understand that there will be a lot of emotion in this news and we share all of these feelings,” he added, according to the report. “We ask you to continue to pray for them and the entire Houston family during this difficult time.”

The second incident concerns Houston going into the hotel room of a woman after the 2019 Hillsong conference, the Daily Mail reported.

While the woman did not make any allegations of sexual misconduct, the church board said the action violated Hillsong Pastor’s code of conduct, the board said. The incident was also attributed to the use of drugs.

“An in-depth investigation has found that Pastor Brian was disoriented … after consuming anti-anxiety drugs over the prescribed dose, mixed with alcohol,” the board said.

Hillsong said Pastor Houston was “extremely reassuring” about his actions and the church apologized for his behavior, the Daily Mail reported.

“We sincerely apologize to the people affected by Pastor Brian’s actions and commit to being available for any further assistance we can offer,” it said, according to the report.
