DeSantis honors swimmer who finished second to Lia Thomas calls her ‘legal winner’ | National News

A 2017 report in the journal Sports Medicine, which reviewed several related studies, found “no direct or consistent research” on trans people who have an athletic advantage over their cisgender peers, in any state of their transition, and critics say that positions like DeSantis only contribute to the discrimination that trans people face, especially trans youth.

Nevertheless, the debate over the inclusion of transgender athletes, particularly women and girls, has become a political turning point in recent years, particularly among conservatives.

So far this year, Iowa and South Dakota have approved legislation banning transgender women and girls from participating in sports teams, consistent with their gender in accredited schools and colleges. In recent years, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi, Montana, Tennessee, Texas and West Virginia have introduced similar sports bans that anger LGBTQ advocates who claim that conservatives create a topic where it does not exist.
