P&O boss Peter Hebblethwaite asked if he is a ‘shameless criminal’

P&O Ferries chief executive Peter Hebblethwaite has issued a “belated” apology after immediately laying off 800 staff.

He told a Commons joint committee he had spent the past week speaking to people one-on-one after the company lost an “unsustainable amount of money” and would have shut down had it not been for the promotion.

Mr Hebblethwaite said no union would have accepted the company’s proposal but then admitted he had not consulted them.

He replied to Labor MP Darren Jones, who asked: “Are you in this mess because you don’t know what you’re doing or are you just a shameless criminal?”
