Several U.S. drugstore chains now say they offer second reinforcement injections of COVID-19 to eligible individuals, after U.S. health officials authorized a double dose of Pfizer and Moderna enhancers for people 50 years of age or older.
The number of Covid-19 cases is rising again in 13 U.S. states as it takes over Omicron’s BA.2 subvariant, leading health experts to recommend an additional dose for the elderly or immunocompromised.
Walgreens announced Wednesday that it would make Pfizer and Moderna’s second booster injections available to eligible people, including adults 50 and older, as well as “certain immunocompromised people,” after both the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has approved an additional reinforcement.

People who received their boosts at least four months ago can schedule their injections online starting Friday, April 1, or go to the pharmacies and roll up their sleeves for the fourth time. They must provide their date of birth and the date and date of their last vaccination against COVID-19.
Walgreens said it is making second booster injections available as COVID-19 positivity rates in parts of the U.S. increase, with the BA.2 subvariant accounting for nearly 70% of all positive cases.
CVS Pharmacy also said that eligible people can get their second booster injections in stores, either by scheduling an online appointment or simply going to pharmacies. A spokesman noted that the availability of reinforcements is subject to local demand.
The Albertsons grocery chain also offers enhanced second-round doses from Pfizer and Moderna. Eligible people can schedule appointments online or in-store.
