As rents soar, here’s what $1,500 a month buys you across the U.S.

Rents increase by double digits all over the nationbut there’s still a big difference between the distance a dollar will take you to New York City and Nebraska.

The best offer in the country is Wichita, Kansas, where $ 1,500 will allow you to get nearly 1,600 square feet, according to an analysis of the RentCafe Apartments website. The average rent in the metropolitan area is $ 746.

At the other end of the spectrum is Manhattan, where $ 1,500 would only cover a third of the typical rent and buy far fewer apartments. That sum would get a tenant less than 300 square feet, a size that is officially classified as a micro-unit.

As RentCafe puts it, "an apartment in Wichita could fit six Manhattan apartments for the same budget."

Prices are not much better in other parts of New York. In Brooklyn or Queens, that same $ 1,500 will typically allow you to get between 300 and 400 square feet of living space.

With so many office workers continuing to register remotely, apartment hunters eager for more space would do well to look into the heart of the nation. In addition to having relatively affordable rental markets, the cities of Nebraska, Oklahoma and Iowa have hung cash incentives to attract remote workers to take root there.
