Ford and General Motors issue recalls on popular SUV models and pickups

Ford and General Motors are issuing major withdrawals covering popular SUV and van models.

General Motors is removing nearly 682,000 compact SUVs because windshield wipers can fail. The withdrawal covers the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain from the 2014 and 2015 model years.

  • BMW is withdrawing 900,000 vehicles, most of them for the third time, due to the risk of engine fires
  • Tesla is withdrawing more than 817,000 vehicles due to a faulty seat belt bell

The ball joints of the wiper module can oxidize, causing one or both wipers to fail, increasing the risk of an accident. Distributors will inspect the module and repair or replace it if necessary. Owners will be notified by letter from May 2.

Ford is issuing two withdrawals covering more than 737,000 vehicles to fix oil leaks and malfunctioning trailer braking systems.

Oil leak removal includes the Ford Escape SUV from 2020 to 2022 and the Bronco Sport SUV from 2021 and 2022 with 1.5-liter engines. A carcass can crack and oil can seep into engine parts, which can create a fire hazard.

Distributors will replace the home if necessary. Owners will be notified starting April 18th.

Trailer braking removal includes the 2021 and 2022 F-150 pickups, as well as the 2022 F-250, 350, 450 and 550 pickups. The 2022 Maverick pickup trucks and the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs are also covered.

A software error can prevent the trailers from braking, increasing the risk of an accident.

Distributors will update the brake control software. Owners will be notified starting April 18th.
