Two students funded by a footballer through university say he has “helped massively”.
Liverpool striker Divock Origi said he set up the scholarships at the University of Liverpool to “empower young people to achieve great things”.
Bushra Ihmaidat and Grace Murphy, both 19 and from the city, recently started law school.
They said they were grateful for the chance the footballer gave them.
The scholarship was open to two students in the 2021-22 academic year and covers the full year’s tuition and funds for supported living expenses for both students in each academic year.
A third student will be sponsored the following year, followed by a final student in 2023-24.
Origi said, “I wanted to set up this undergraduate scholarship to give young people the opportunity to develop their own passion the way I did.”
Ms Ihmaidat said her studies went “extraordinarily well” and she enjoyed university life “although it was a big change from school”.
She said: “This scholarship has massively helped me to have access to the same opportunities as other students and to excel in my previous studies.
“I am very grateful to Divock and this opportunity he has given me and I hope to see more of its positive impact in the future.”
Ms Murphy said starting university was “very exciting” and she was “so grateful for the opportunity of a scholarship”.
“It’s been a great help. My studies are going well so far and I look forward to learning more as my studies progress,” she added.
