A super Pac affiliated with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is making more than $ 140 million in advertising purchases for the final stretch of the Midterm elections in 2022 this fall.
The Senate Leadership Fund announced Monday that the group is buying $ 141 million in ads in seven key states, starting in September. Politico was the first to denounce the reservations.
The group’s ads will try to protect Republican seats in North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin and will try to change the seats of Democrats in Arizona, Georgia and Nevada. Part of the spending will also go to Alaska to help Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski, who faces a rival backed by Trump.
“This is such a strong year that we need to invest in the broadest and deepest way we can,” Steven Law, chairman of the Senate Leadership Fund, told Politico in an interview. “In the Senate, majority control is everything. It determines what happens in plenary and what doesn’t.”
There will be a fierce battle for the Senate in November, which is currently split 50-50. The states that the Senate Leadership Fund is targeting with its ad buying are among the most competitive seats on the map.
A key battleground not included in ad purchases at this time is New Hampshire. Democratic incumbent Maggie Hassan faces a tough bid for re-election, but some Republicans, including Trump adviser Corey Lewandowski, have raised questions about Republican candidates. Law told Politico that he feels “very confident that we will end up playing in New Hampshire”.
The spending will include $ 37 million in Georgia, in an attempt to oust it Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock$ 27 million in North Carolina, which currently has an open seat for Republicans, $ 24 million in Pennsylvania, which is also an open seat for the GOP, $ 15 million each in Nevada, where Republicans want to defeat Democratic Senator Catherine Cortez Masto and Wisconsin, where she is a Republican Ron Johnson is ready for re-election. There is also $ 14 million in planned spending in Arizona, where Republicans want to defeat Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly.
Records submitted to the Federal Electoral Commission show that the Senate Leadership Fund raised about $ 25 million in contributions during the first quarter and has $ 72 million in cash in hand.
The Senate majority PAC, the Democrat’s super PAC, had about $ 36 million in cash in hand at the end of February. The group has moved to set aside $ 106 million for ads in Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin starting in August, according to Politico.
A significant portion, $ 7.4 million, is also being set aside to help Murkowski, yes running for his fourth term. Alaska is holding a non-partisan primary for the first time this year, which means the top four candidates will run in the general election. The November winner will be determined by a by-election vote, which is likely to make the challenge for Murkowski more difficult.
