A teenager has been charged with the murder of another young man who was on his way home from a prom.
Patrick Sharp, 18, is accused of killing Kajetan Migdal, also 18, who died in hospital from his injuries around 11:20pm BST on Friday after an attack on Cuttys Lane in Stevenage.
Hertfordshire Police said Mr Sharp has also been charged with possession of an assault weapon and Class A drugs.
He is later due to appear before the magistrates at St Albans.
In a statement, Mr Migdal’s family said they were “devastated” and that he was “missed greatly by all who knew him”.
His aunt Corrie Everett, who set up an online funeral fundraising page, said her “handsome, talented, smart” nephew was on his way home from his prom.
Mr Migdal’s school, Saint John Henry Newman Catholic School, also confirmed the attack took place after the 13th grade prom.
The school opened its chapel on Sunday, where “family, friends and staff came together to commemorate Kajetan.”
It said the secondary school would open on Monday to offer counseling to students.
Det Insp Justine Jenkins, of Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire’s Serious Crime Unit, said: “Our thoughts remain with Kajetan’s family and friends at this extremely difficult time.
“Special officials continue to support his family and we ask again that their privacy be respected.”
She added that officers are “still appealing for witnesses who have not yet spoken to police to please come forward.”
Det Supt Michael Trotman said: “I understand that news of this incident will have come as a huge shock to the community and our thoughts are with all those affected.
“If you have any concerns please do not hesitate to contact your local police Safer Neighborhood Team.
“An indictment has now been secured and it is important that the case moves unhindered through the courts.”
