Musk to hold first meeting with Twitter staff this week

Elon Musk is set to speak to Twitter employees on Thursday for the first time since he made his $44 billion (£36.2 billion) bid for the company in April.

The billionaire Tesla boss is expected to answer questions from Twitter employees at the meeting.

Mr Musk has warned he could walk away from the deal if the firm fails to provide data on fake accounts on the platform.

The event was announced by Twitter boss Parag Agrawal in an email to employees on Monday.

Mr Agrawal told staff they could ask Mr Musk questions before the meeting.

The news, first reported by Business Insider, was confirmed to the BBC by a spokesman for Twitter.

The all-hands meeting is the first time Mr. Musk has spoken directly to the company’s workforce since the launch of his takeover bid.

Earlier this month, he threatened to back out of the deal, accusing the social media company of “frustrating” his requests to learn more about its user base.

In a letter filed with regulators, Mr Musk said he was authorized to conduct his own measurement of spam accounts.

The letter formalized a dispute that had been simmering for weeks after he declared the deal “on hold” pending further information.

Analysts have said Mr Musk could use the issue to try to renegotiate the price or even back out of the deal. They said his decision to raise the matter on social media was unconventional, making it difficult to ascertain how serious he was.

When Mr Agrawal defended the company’s process for identifying fake accounts in a series of tweets, Mr Musk responded with a poo emoji.

Shares of the company closed Monday’s New York trade at $37.03 a share, well below Mr Musk’s offer price of $54.20.
