Belfast: The sounds of the city during Covid lockdowns

During the coronavirus pandemic, cities around the world have been emptied as lockdown restrictions were put in place.

A PhD student from Queen’s University Belfast used this time to film for his final research project.

Georgios Varoutsos used his daily lockdown walks to soak up the sounds of Belfast city centre.

Like many cities in the UK, Belfast had previously been dominated by the sounds of human activity. During lockdown these have been replaced with subtle industrial, urban and natural sounds.

BBC News NI has merged Georgio’s audio files with drone footage captured in Belfast city center during and after the lockdown.
