(CNN)Marin Cilic has withdrawn from the Australian Open after struggling to shake off an intractable shoulder injury.
The reigning US Open champion was forced to sit out this week’s ATP Tour event in Brisbane and had previously said he hoped to be back in time for the first Major of the year in Melbourne.
However, a post on the player’s Facebook page on Saturday confirmed the 26-year-old Croatian will not recover in time.
“(The) right shoulder injury that has been hampering me for a while…is improving by the day, but I still don’t feel fit enough to compete at the highest level,” the post reads.
“I’m really sad that I can’t compete in Melbourne, especially after winning the last Grand Slam in New York, but I’ve been advised by doctors to be as careful as possible to avoid even more serious problems.”
“I’ve received many letters of support from my fans around the world lately and I’m grateful for your support and best wishes.”
The Australian Open is the first Grand Slam tournament of the year and begins on January 19 in Melbourne.
World No. 12 and 2008 Australian Open finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was forced to retire earlier this week due to an arm injury.
There are also doubts about the fitness of 14-time Major winner Rafa Nadal, who has struggled for fitness and form since his appendectomy last November.
