A wildlife organization is seeking help to find the culprit in the brutal attacks on at least 32 brown pelicans that have been mutilated and left dead along the coast of California’s Orange County, which stretches from San Clemente to in Huntington Beach.
According to the Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center, a rehabilitation center focused on helping injured animals, 22 of the pelicans have suffered compound fractures in the wings, which causes the bone to be exposed to the environment. “These are very serious injuries that require emergency surgery and long-term care,” said Dr. Elizabeth Wood, a veterinarian who helps treat injured animals.
In recent months, the increase in pelican attacks has led to the belief that the organization was done intentionally.
The organization held a press conference on Wednesday and asked anyone with information to contact the authorities at 888-334-2258. There is also a $ 500 reward for information, according to CBS Los Angeles.
“Be our eyes and our ears – be alert when you are in our oceans or near our oceans,” the center said in a statement.
