FIFA and UEFA suspend Russian national teams and clubs from all competitions “until further notice”

FIFA and UEFA have suspended Russian national teams and clubs from all international football competitions “until further notice”, the organizations announced on Monday. The suspension, which comes after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, will likely leave the Russian team out of the next World Cup in Qatar.

“Football is fully united here and in full solidarity with all the people affected in Ukraine,” the organizations said in a statement. “The two presidents hope that the situation in Ukraine will improve significantly and quickly so that football will once again be a vector of unity and peace among the people.”

FIFA and UEFA have jointly announced that they will suspend the participation of all Russian teams in FIFA and UEFA competitions “until further notice”.

FIFA oversees football around the world while UEFA, one of the six mainland organizations, governs sport in Europe. He last also announced ended its partnership with Gazprom, a Russian-majority state-owned energy company that is a major sponsor of UEFA.

“The decision is effective immediately and covers all existing agreements, including the UEFA Champions League, UEFA national team competitions and UEFA EURO 2024,” UEFA said.

Decisions have come later sports organizations have clashed global pressure to sever ties with Russian athletes and relocate international sporting events to Russia.
