Liz Truss criticised by SNP’s Keith Brown at party conference

Liz Truss is a “symptom of dysfunction in Westminster,” the SNP deputy leader said at his party’s conference in Aberdeen.

Keith Brown aimed at Westminster in his speech at the first in-person SNP conference since before the pandemic.

He also speculated whether Conservative MPs would soon “oust” the prime minister.

Of Liz Truss, he said, “She has caused more chaos and confusion than even the most pessimistic forecast.”

Watched by SNP chief Nicola Sturgeon, he continued: “In less than a month, she’s fueled the economy, risked millions of dollars in pensions, removed the cap on bankers’ bonuses, announced income tax cuts and then flipped wealthy, created a debt crisis and showed the world that she is uniquely unsuitable for the job.

“The mess she made is no surprise.

“She was a minister in the Tory government for a decade, serving under Cameron, May and Johnson. From austerity to Brexit, she has been complicit in imposing the worst Tory policies on the people of this country.

“It’s a sobering thought that when history is made of 2022, it will find that Boris Johnson wasn’t even the worst prime minister that year.”

Mr Brown added: “What is clear is that Liz Truss is a symptom of the dysfunction at Westminster – not the cause.

“The mere fact that she and her political agenda were deemed acceptable to even set foot on Downing Street speaks volumes.”

The Vice-Chairman urged members to unite and stand up for independence with kindness.

He said the way the SNP was running the campaign was a promotion for Scotland, which he wanted to see.

Mr Brown also said the Westminster system was beyond repair and claimed Labor was the handmaiden of yet another Tory rule.

He condemned Labour, describing leader Sir Keir Starmer as “just another Tony Blair” and accused the party of “being as Trumpian as the Tories in their denial of Scottish democracy”.

He told delegates: “It is an indisputable fact that the SNP has a cast-iron mandate to hold an independence referendum.

“But Labor is always with the Tories to protect control of Westminster – no matter what the price the people of Scotland pay. Labor supports the deeply damaging Brexit, which Scotland did not vote for.

“I repeat, Labor supports Brexit and opposes any Scottish bid to bring our country back into the European family of nations.

“And never forget, never forget that in 2014 it was Labor who championed the No campaign message that only a No would bring economic stability.

“It seems absurd now, but that’s what Labor promised. You can’t trust them with our future.”

Mr Brown announced plans for the party to enter the “broadcast arena”.

“We will soon be launching a new broadcast platform with the first episode of this new show covering the debate on the future of Scotland,” he told the conference.

The show appeared to be a podcast called Scotland’s Voices, with a one-minute clip of people from Glasgow reacting to the Prime Minister on podcast streaming platforms.

Westminster leader Ian Blackford will speak on Saturday afternoon, with Nicola Sturgeon’s keynote speech on Monday.
