North Carolina Congressman Madison Cawthorn charged for driving with revoked license, third recent traffic offense

Representative of the United States Madison Cawthorn of North Carolina has been charged with driving with a revoked license, the state highway patrol confirmed to CBS News. This is the third traffic violation of the congressman reported by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol in the last six months.

Cawthorn was arrested for a traffic violation around 10:30 a.m. last Thursday, according to the road patrol. An agent then found that Cawthorn’s license was “in a state of revocation,” the road patrol said.

Madison was charged with driving while the license was revoked, the state highway patrol said. He is scheduled to appear in Shelby, North Carolina court on May 6.

The Republican politician was cited in January for speeding in Polk County. According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Cawthorn was traveling at 87 mph in a 70 mph zone. His court appointment for this position is scheduled for April 18.

On October 18, 2021, Cawthorn was charged with speeding in Buncombe County. The highway patrol said it was traveling at 89 mph in a 65 mph zone.

The Cawthorn office did not immediately respond to CBS News’ request for comment.
