Presenter Martine Croxall is under investigation by BBC News for “possible breach of impartiality”.
The PA news agency has also reported that Croxall has been taken off the air pending the conclusion of the investigation.
Complaints followed on social media that she was showing bias when hosting Sunday’s newspaper criticism program.
During her introduction, after Boris Johnson ruled himself out of the race for the Conservative leadership, Croxall told viewers she felt “glory”.
The program aired about 90 minutes after the former Prime Minister claimed he had enough support to advance in the Tory leadership race but decided to pull out.
As The Papers program began just after 10:30pm on Sunday night, Croxall told viewers: “Well, that’s all very exciting, isn’t it? Welcome to our look at what the newspapers will bring us tomorrow. can i be that Happy? Well, that’s me.”
She was then seen asking her guests: “Can we even show you the covers anymore, have they arrived? No, they haven’t arrived. It’s all a bit, you know, lastminute.com, isn’t it? Because all the front pages were probably out of date when we got them.”
On Monday, a BBC spokesman said: “BBC News is urgently reviewing yesterday’s edition of The Papers on the news channel for a possible breach of impartiality.
“It is imperative that we maintain the highest editorial standards. We have processes in place to maintain our standards and those processes have been activated.”
Croxall has not yet commented publicly on the matter.
One Conservative MP, Neil O’Brien, called the presenter’s comments “self-destructive”.
Nick Timothy, a former adviser to former Prime Minister Theresa May, added: “Whatever you think of Johnson, if you care about the BBC you cannot believe that this is in any way acceptable from any of their presenters.”
It was not made clear by Croxall or the BBC whether she was referring to Mr Johnson’s withdrawal or the fast-moving news agenda.
However, she told an onlooker on Twitter to put their comments in context. She added that she will be returning to the airwaves on Monday night.
