Teachers in Scotland offered new pay deal of up to 6.85%

A new salary offer of up to 6.85% has been made to teachers in Scotland.

The unions will now examine employer Cosla’s fourth deal.

Members of the largest teachers’ union, EIS, are set to go on strike on Thursday, which will result in the closure of most primary and secondary schools in Scotland.

Education Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville said the offer was fair and “recognises that the cost of living crisis is a priority”.

Ahead of the new offer, the minister told the Scottish Parliament that the 10% demand by teachers’ representatives was “unaffordable” for the Scottish Government.

EIS general secretary Andrea Bradley had previously said she was “hopeful” an improved offer could be put on the table.

Cosla, the umbrella organization for Scotland’s 32 councils, called on the EIS to “postpone Thursday’s strike”.

Spokesperson Katie Hagmann said: “Scottish Local Government values its entire workforce, of which teachers play a key role. We made a revised fourth offer to our union colleagues this afternoon. It’s fair, affordable and recognizes that the cost of housing crisis is a priority, with higher pay increases for employees with lower pay points.

“This is consistent with what is being offered to all other parts of the public sector.”
