Dave knocks Bruno off the top of the singles chart

British rap star Dave has broken Disney’s spell on the UK Singles Chart.

His surprise single Starlight, released to commemorate his UK arena tour, went straight to number one, selling 63,000 copies.

Thus ends the seven-week reign of We Don’t Talk About Bruno, the breakout hit from Disney’s animated film Encanto.

Based on the jazz standard Fly Me To The Moon, Starlight is Dave’s second number one following 2018’s Funky Friday.

According to the Official Charts Company, it was streamed 7.7 million times last week, which helped Dave have the biggest opening-week sales of any artist this year.

The Brit and Mercury Award winner’s second album We’re All Alone In This Together also climbed back into the top 5 at number five.

We Don’t Talk About Bruno falls to number ninth – a victim of the chart’s “accelerated decline” rule, which halves the streaming numbers of older songs to prevent them from clogging up the top 40 indefinitely.

This shift affects the rest of the top 10, with Sam Fender’s Seventeen Going Under, Mimi Webb’s House on Fire and Overseas by D-Block Europe and Central Cee all moving up a spot. Fender’s hit also goes platinum this week, marking 600,000 total sales.

Many other up-and-coming hits also benefit from We Don’t Talk About Bruno’s window lintel.

MNEK and Jax Jones’ club anthem “Where Did You Go” makes it into the top 10 for the first time in five weeks on the charts. George Ezra’s comeback single “Anyone For You” continues its six-week climb, peaking at No 13 a new high. And after a quarter of a year as a chart hit in the middle ranking, Tiesto & Ava Max’ pop barnstormer “The Motto” achieved its highest ranking of well over 17.

The biggest climbers are Russ Millions, Buni and YV, who jump 34 places to No. 12 with their infectious farce track Reggae & Calypso.

Camila Cabello is also celebrating her 15th UK Top 40 hit with the Latin Bam Bam (with Ed Sheeran), debuting at 22.

Welsh rockers Stereophonics hit the album charts with their 25th anniversary album Oochya!

The success makes them one of the most successful chart acts of all time, tied with Taylor Swift, Oasis, Kylie Minogue and REM – who also have eight chart-topping acts. The Beatles have the most at 15, followed by Elvis Presley and Robbie Williams, who both have 13.

Stereophonics finished ahead of rock band Marillion, whose twentieth album An Hour Before It’s Dark peaked at number two – their highest entry on the albums chart since 1987’s Clutching at Straws.

Elsewhere in the top 10, The Coral’s eponymous debut album bounced back to number seven thanks to its remastered 20th anniversary edition.

Next week could be new entries from Ella Henderson, whose sophomore album Everything I Didn’t Say took nearly eight years; Bryan Adams with his ’80s throwback album So Happy It Hurts; and Franz Ferdinand, who released a best-of compilation called Hits To The Head.

Megan Thee Stallion and Dua Lipa, who teamed up on bass-pounding pop anthem Sweetest Pie, are likely to be making the biggest splash on the singles chart.

Aitch also has his sights set on the Top 40 with the Hooky Ashanti collaboration Baby; while Ms Banks scored her first UK chart hit thanks to a seductive duet with Tion Wayne called Typa Way.
