Brexit: Micheál Martin and Boris Johnson discuss NI Protocol

The Northern Ireland Protocol was discussed at a meeting between Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) Micheal Martin and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson in London.

Both leaders met before attending the England-Ireland rugby match at Twickenham on Saturday.

They also spoke about the situation in Ukraine.

Mr Martin holds a number of engagements in London in the run-up to St Patrick’s Day.

The Taoiseach will lead the city’s parade on Sunday to celebrate the event, which will pay tribute to the role of the Irish in London during the Covid-19 pandemic.

During the meeting, Mr Martin and Mr Johnson discussed ways of working together to ensure the return of the Northern Ireland executive after May’s general election.

Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson said it would be difficult for his party to form a government unless issues surrounding the protocol were addressed.

  • A simple guide to the Brexit border issue

The mechanism to ensure free trade across the Irish border after Brexit has been criticized by some unionists for its impact on trade between the UK and Northern Ireland.

In February, the DUP’s Paul Givan resigned as First Minister as part of the party’s protest against protocol, leading to the collapse of the executive branch.

The Taoiseach welcomed the ongoing engagement between the UK and the European Union on this issue.

He also tweeted to explain that they were discussing the war in Ukraine and humanitarian aid.

Mr Martin “welcomed the close cooperation between the EU, the UK and our partners to hold Russia accountable”.
