Lord Young barred from debate after falling asleep in Parliament

A Labor Member of the House of Lords has been ousted for falling asleep in the Chamber.

Lord Young of Norwood Green was scheduled to take part in a debate on draft regulations on genetically modified organisms late Monday evening.

But as he began to speak, he was reprimanded by the government whip, Lady Bloomfield, who said: “The noble lord slept soundly throughout the minister’s speech.”

When Lord Young began to reply, Lady Bloomfield replied, “I had to send you a message to wake you from the doorkeeper.”
