Special access inside Big Ben’s newly refurbished clock tower

Exterior work on Big Ben’s Elizabeth Tower is nearing completion and the removal of the scaffolding has revealed the blue and gold color scheme on the dial, returning it to its original design.

Inside the building, work is still underway to ensure that the tower, completed in 1859, meets current building codes and is fit for use in the 21st century.

Once the bells are reconnected to the original Victorian clockwork, they will ring continuously again.

The BBC has been granted access inside the tower to see what work has been done.

The restoration is due to be completed in the summer of 2022 with a budget of £79.7 million.
