Honduras judge says ex-president Juan Orlando Hernández can be extradited to U.S.

Former President Juan Orlando Hernandez should be extradited in the United States to face charges of drug and arms trafficking, a Honduran judge sentenced on Wednesday.

Before the decision was announced, court spokesman Melvin Duarte said that during an early morning hearing, Hernandez went to court. “In general terms, he discussed the reasons that led to this extradition process against him, which he and his wife have said publicly,” Duarte said.

Then-Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez answers questions on August 13, 2019, when he leaves a meeting of the Organization of American States in Washington DC.

Hernandez has claimed that the statements against him were made by drug traffickers extradited by his government who wanted revenge on him. He has denied any links to drug traffickers.

You will have the opportunity to appeal the extradition decision.

During the hearing, the judge presented a document sent by the U.S. Department of Justice through the U.S. Embassy in Tegucigalpa setting out the charges against Hernandez. Hernandez’s lawyers also presented at least 20 pieces of evidence in his defense.

Hernandez left office in January at the end of his second term.
