Juventus 0-3 Villarreal (1-4 overall): Unai Emery’s side scored three late goals to reach the quarter-finals

Villarreal reach the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since 2008-09

Villarreal have scored three late goals to advance to the Champions League quarter-finals as Juventus have come out on top in the last 16 for a third year in a row.

The Spaniard had no chance to score before substitute Gerard Moreno converted a penalty 78 minutes into the match after a dash down the middle by Daniele Rugani.

Defender Pau Torres added a second as he finished from six yards out as Juventus did not deal a corner.

Arnaud Danjuma made it 3-0 with another penalty after Matthijs De Ligt handled it.

“We had a game plan and knew there were going to be difficult moments,” said Villarreal boss Unai Emery.

“Whoever we get in the draw will be a top side, just like the ones we faced.”

The draw for the quarter-finals will take place on Friday at 11:00 GMT and Villarreal will be in the last eight of the competition for the first time since 2008-09 and only the third time in its history.

After a 1-1 draw in Spain last week, two-time European champions Juventus were clear favorites to advance and they dominated the first half at the Allianz Stadium.

However, Juventus’ Dusan Vlahovic, a first-leg goal scorer, crossed the crossbar and was twice denied by Villarreal goalkeeper Gero Rulli, who also saved an effort from ex-Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata.

Villarreal, led by former Arsenal boss Emery, had to defend deep in numbers for the majority of the second half.

However, in a rare attack, substitute Coquelin of Rugani was fouled by referee Szymon Marciniak, who awarded the penalty after looking at it on a pitchside monitor.

Moreno came close to extending the visitors’ lead when he found himself completely unmarked in front of the goal after a pass through the middle, but he lifted the ball over Wojciech Szczesny and it was a little too high and hit the bar.

Juventus have been eliminated from competition in this phase in the last two years, with Lyon in 2020 and Porto in 2021, and have fallen apart in the last 10 minutes.

Terrible corner defense allowed Torres to double Villarreal’s advantage before former Bournemouth striker Danjuma converted another point in injury time.

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said: “I think the team played well for over 75 minutes.

“In the second half, Villarreal decided to just defend and block, but they had a chance and they took it. Football is like this: one episode can change everything.

“Villarreal defended with 11 men, clearly trying to bring the game into extra time. Then that goal changed everything.”

Villarreal, seventh in La Liga, have qualified for the Champions League since winning the Europa League final last season – beating Manchester United 11-10 in an epic penalty shootout as United goalkeeper David de Gea was the deciding factor. Missed penalty.
