‘Explosion’ at Braemar Lodge Hotel as huge flames engulf the building

A fire has broken out at a hotel in Aberdeenshire in connection with reports of an “explosion”.

The Braemar Lodge Hotel, in Braemar, Ballater went up in flames on Wednesday morning.

Firefighters sent six devices to the scene, while other emergency services were also on the scene.

Police cordoned off the area and assisted hotel guests who were evacuated.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) has confirmed that they have been called upon to report a “shed on fire”.

The fire spread to a “near commercial building”.

Shocking images shared with the Daily Record show huge flames towering over the hotel.

Firefighters were found guarding the area while a large police cordon was pulled down.

One of the buildings in the photo appears to have been completely destroyed by firefighters still extinguishing the fire.

The fire can be seen from the neighboring streets and residential areas.

Massive plume of steam bills from the roof of what is claimed to be the restaurant area.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, although people have taken to social media to claim that they “heard an explosion”.

One has speculated that the ‘bunkhouse’ is on fire, which is an on-site self-catering accommodation for up to 12 people.

Another local claimed the bunkhouse was “just recently made for staff”.

Meanwhile, another claimed that the fire had spread to the hotel restaurant.

West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine MP Andrew Bowie expressed his shock over the news.

He wrote: “Shocked to hear of an explosion at Braemar Lodge this morning.

“Massive thanks to @fire_scot and @Scotambservice who are on the scene and sharing thoughts with everyone.”

By 10.30am, three hours later, firefighters were still on the scene and had no casualties to report.

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were alerted at 7.37pm on Wednesday, March 16th to reports of a fire in Glenshee Road, Braemar, Ballater.

“Operations Control mobilizes six fire extinguishers, a high-altitude vehicle and a water heater at the scene where the fire affected a nearby commercial building.

“Firefighters are still on the scene at the moment and no casualties have been reported.”

Police told the record that from 11 a.m., officers were still at the scene.

Police closed the A93 Glenshee Road Braemar with local diversions on the spot.

A spokesman told the Record: “Emergency services are on the scene following a fire at a hotel on Glenshee Road in Braemar, which was reported on Wednesday, March 16 at 7.50am.

“The owners of the hotel were evacuated and no one was injured.

“The A93 Glenshee Road is closed to Braemar and local diversions are in place.”

The Scottish Ambulance Service has been contacted for comment.
