He used his newfound fame to launch himself as an actor / producer. For Channel 4 he developed and starred in The Irish RM with Bryan Murray, with whom he also appeared in the con-Man series Perfect Scoundrels; for ITV he developed and appeared in Lytton’s Diary, a series about a Fleet Street gossip columnist. He also starred in Running Late, a television drama written by Simon Gray.
When television appearances began in the mid-1990s, Bowles returned to the theater and was invited to work with Sir Peter Hall. He played the lead opposite Jemma Redgrave in the Hall’s production of Bernard Shaw’s Major Barbara at the Piccadilly Theater, and went on to appear in many more West End hits, including School For Wives, The Misanthrope, The Royal Family , Rattigan’s Separate Tables, Sleuth and Heeschnapp.
His last play for Hall was Sheridan’s rivals Penelope Keith (2011, Theater Royal, Haymarket).
