President Michael D Higgins has issued a St Patrick’s Day message calling for solidarity with the people of Ukraine.
President Higgins said a dark shadow had been cast “over our world as we watched the unfolding events in Ukraine.
“I know that the hearts of the Irish and the Irish communities around the world go out to all those people who are suffering from this completely unacceptable, immoral and unjustified invasion and violence into their lives.”
In his St Patrick’s Day message, the president said that the people urgently need to “unite our voices to demand a direct ceasefire, respect for humanitarian law, and the withdrawal of Russian troops.”
He also referred to the Cvid-19 pandemic in his message, saying that it was hoped that “we will start to get out of the dark shadows” of it.
